There is so much to do, see, and taste here in Natchez! Do not worry, though! We have narrowed it down to 5 activities that you must experience during your visit, along with the top 5 amenities here at Devereaux Shields House.
1. Take in the sights of our stunning, historic downtown
The 300 years of history in downtown Natchez are evident throughout the antebellum homes, churches, parks, and more. It is the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River, so you can truly experience the history, culture, and Southern charm as you explore. With over 1,000 structures on the National Register of Historic Places, you will not run out of architectural treasures to see. So, follow the five Natchez trails, described in the Visitor’s Guide on page 32, as you walk or bike through downtown and view all the significant sites. If you want a more traditional tour, check out the many tour options, such as a romantic horse-drawn carriage tour.
2. Savor an authentic, Southern meal at one of our favorite local restaurants
Conveniently, downtown is also a hot spot for some of our favorite Natchez eateries. Here in the South, each meal is cooked with love and pride. So, whether you are wanting old-fashioned barbecue or elegant dining, the Natchez food scene offers many delicious options. Check out one of our favorite downtown restaurants. You can stop by Magnolia Grill, a local staple, specializing in regional cuisine with great views of the Mississippi River. The summer is a great time to explore our fine selection of restaurants with the finest food made by the region’s most prominent chefs. Recent fine-dining additions include The Kitchen Bistro & Piano Bar, and wonderful small plates & beverages at The Castle Pub at Dunleith Historic Inn.
3. Experience the Origins of American Music
If you love American Music, then you have come to the right place because Mississippi is the “birthplace of the blues” and falls within the Americana Music Triangle, birthplace of 9 genres of American music. You can start by visiting Natchez’s 4 markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail to learn more about the origins of this soulful music genre. Then, experience the live music at Rolling River Reloaded every night Monday through Saturday. Check our town’s event lineup to see who is playing because there is plenty of music and entertainment every night of the week.
4. Learn about our rich history and culture
There is a lot more to Natchez history and culture than the stunning architecture. Our deep roots go back to the Natchez Indian tribe, who settled in southwestern Mississippi. Learn more about them by visiting Grand Village, walking on Emerald Mound, or taking the Natchez Indian Tour. Mississippi is also home to trials, tribulations, perseverance, and successes throughout African American history, which you can take in at the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture. You can enjoy one or more of several tours available to learn more about Natchez, including Rev’s City or Region Tours, Downtown Horse-drawn Carriage Tour, Open Air Tours or Karla Brown’s Tours. Natchez also holds history from throughout the Civil War, due to its prime location on the Mississippi River. Natchez began as the transportation and production center for the Confederates and then became a military outpost for the Union. There are many historic landmarks from this time, such as the Melrose Mansion and other stunning antebellum mansions.
5. Relax with an onsite pampering spa treatment
After a full day of exploring, take some time for yourself and enjoy a trip to the spa. If you want to stay here and relax in your comfortable suite, reserve an onsite pampering single or couple’s massage treatment (subject to therapists availability). If you want to go into town, visit Anruss and Co., an upscale spa in downtown Natchez with a wide variety of services, including hair care, manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials. For additional options, read about more of our favorite onsite pampering experiences.
